Gender Equality Matters

The latest project ESHA is involved in is a project called Gender Equality Matters – Tackling Gender-Based Violence, aptly called GEM.
The objectives of this project are to raise awareness, change attitudes and promote behaviour changes in relation to gender-based violence generally, with specific reference to violence perpetrated against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community in and around schools.
In this two-year project the ESHA has partnered with Dublin City University (DCU – Ireland), Social Action and Innovation Center (KMOP – Greece), Research Group in Educational Technology/University of Murcia (GITE – Spain) and Fondazione Mondo Digitale (FMD – Italy).
The target groups are school-aged children (10+), parents, teachers and school heads. When working together all targets groups will have the potential to challenge attitudes, values and behaviours across school systems, school surroundings, families and local communities.
Participants will benefit from multiple deliverables listed below:
- Open national events for student, parents and educators;
- Newsletters to highlight the milestones of the project;
- Leaflets for use within specific target groups;
- Articles and journal publications;
- Project webpage, promotion of GEM through partner’s webpages and GEM-related social media platforms;
- Community webpage highlighting national initiatives and projects for students, parents and educators;
- Classroom and school resources for educators;
- Self-evaluation instruments for schools/educators;
- Training modules and manuals for teachers and teacher trainers;
- Training workshops for parents;
- Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) for students, parents and educators;
- Final conference for partners and school leaders to be held in Dublin in June 2020.
Partners in GEM
Dublin City University (DCU)
The partnership of GEM is led by a team from Dublin City University (DCU) who are associates of the National Anti-Bullying Research and Resource Centre (ABC).
DCU is internationally recognised as a top young university, being both a QS Top 100 under 50 and THE Top 150 under 50. We have an extensive range of courses, including Undergraduate Programmes of 3-4 years, 1-year Masters programmes, research programmes and Study Abroad programmes. DCU has the distinction being the fastest growing university in Ireland and being the leading young university on the island or Ireland. It has over 50,000 graduates and counting.
University of Murcia – Group of Research in Educational Technology (GITE)
GITE (Spain) is specialized in exploring the uses of ICT to learn in formal and informal contexts, always from the pedagogical point of view. Nevertheless, apart from our normal cooperation with other colleagues from education, we collaborate with several technological researchers and developers as well, in order to enrich and complement our vision.
GITE’s research interests include the following major topics:
- E-learning: methodologies and models;
- Personal Learning Environments (PLE);
- Digital Competence and Digital Citizenship;
- Digital identity;
- Social impact of new technologies.
Fondazione Mondo Digitale (FMD)
Fondazione Mondo Digitale (Italy) works towards an inclusive knowledge society by blending innovation, education, inclusion and fundamental values. Its mission is to promote social learning, social innovation and e-inclusion with special attention to categories at risk of social exclusion.

Social Action and Innovation Center (KMOP)
KMOP is the Social Action and Innovation Centre (Greece). With more than 40 years of accumulated experience in supporting disadvantaged groups. Founded in 1977, KMOP is one of the oldest NGOs in Greece. KMOP has various offices in Greece and has representative offices in Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Albania, Serbia and Brussels.
In a rapidly changing world where existing theories and ideologies cannot give answers to the contemporary problems, our scope is to contribute actively by developing and implementing a variety of tools, programmes and policies. Apart from direct provision of services through decentralised community based facilities, counseling and educational services, we are active in scientific research and in the provision of capacity building to public authorities and CSOs. Our partners reflect our global nature as we work across countries and across sectors.
European School Heads Association (ESHA)
The European School Heads Association (The Netherlands), is a professional organization for European School Heads. Members of ESHA are national organisations for school heads and deputy school heads within (pre-) primary, secondary and vocational education. Nearly all European countries (both EU and non-EU) are represented within ESHA by one or more organisations.
ESHA is an international community in which experiences, visions and views between members are exchanged and in which new ideas are born. ESHA connects school leaders, researchers and policy makers with the collective aim to learn from each other and improve education.
ESHA’s main role in the GEM project is dissemination of deliverables (see above).
In line with regulations set by the European Union all project materials that are delivered will be free of cost and for use to the benefit of the (schooling) community as a whole.
